Fried Turkey Fire in Chipley Home?

Our local team in Crestview, DeFuniak Springs, and Chipley wishes everyone in Chipley a very Happy Thanksgiving. We often respond to fire damage emergencies during the holiday season. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were 1600 reported home cooking fires on Thanksgiving in 2017. The NFPA strongly discourages turkey fryers because they can cause severe burns, injuries, and property damage. They recommend forgoing the home turkey fryer and getting a fried turkey from a grocery store, restaurant, or another food retailer.

Our fire restoration technicians have witnessed many instances of fried turkey fires. Here are some of the more common reasons turkey fryers catch on fire:

  1. Too much oil is placed in the fryer without factoring in the oil displacement by the bird. The oil spills over the side and ignites with the burner below.
  2. Sometimes the fryers are knocked over by curious pets or clumsy guests
  3. Other times, the fryer is positioned next to combustible materials, like wooden tables or fences, and when the fryers tip over, the oil and fuel ignite and catch fire
